Passing the Torch - Wit & Wisdom from Senior and Retired Airport Leaders

Perhaps one of the greatest untapped resources available for understanding the challenges of managing airports can be found among the many senior and retired airport leaders. There needs to be an opportunity to assemble the collective wisdom of these successful leaders and to share their insights and experiences gained during their careers.

Guidance on Concept Planning and Designing of Airport Collaboration Centers

Airports are increasingly interested in bringing multi-disciplines together in a common environment to improve collaborative decision making during regular and irregular operations. Guidance on how to plan and design for these centers is needed.

Open innovation in the terminal: real-time feedback from travelers on airport initiatives

A lot of talent goes through the terminals daily. Airports can solicit targetted feedback on specific projects and initiatives from the travelers. There is no better source or time since the customers are in the right state of mind to provide feedback that affects them.

Strategies to mitigate concentrated aircraft noise from PBN and RNP/RNAV procedures

The research will characterize the changes in community noise impacts due to the implementation of RNP procedures. It will provide a solid picture of the character and scope of the problem through case studies and noise modeling. Possible mitigation strategies will be explored detailing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach supported by parametric noise analyses.

Helicopter and Tiltrotor Noise Modeling Procedures Document

The objective of this research effort is to develop written documentation on best available methods to model community noise generated from helicopter and tiltrotor operations. The document should address integrated and simulation modeling techniques, and methods for collecting and analyzing noise source data, and outline noise source development protocols. The language and format of the document shall be suitable for... more »

Using Data and Behavioral Sciences to Enhance the Customer Experience through an Engaged and Skilled Workforce

Customer experience is a key driver of passenger satisfaction, airport revenue, and the overall ranking of an airport. Helping airports to become more people-oriented, to listen to the voice of their customers, and proactively meet the needs of diverse customers, particularly international passengers, will enhance the overall airport experience, and allow American airports to better compete with top international airports.... more »

Effective Task Saturation Interventions to Improve Airport Employee Performance

The objective of this research is to improve airport employee
performance under conditions of task saturation. While task saturation
is listed as a top 10 safety concern, there is little to no evidence
that there are interventions in place to mitigate its impact on human
performance. This research will produce an intervention (training, tool,
etc.) that will be made available to airports nationwide for
their use. The... more »

Access for Active Modes

Encouragement of non automobile use to/from and within the airport is important to minimizing traffic and enhancing air quality. While many airports are located within walking distance of airport office parks and employee housing, many airports cannot be accessed by pedestrians and bicyclists. The advent of new technologies like e-scooters and e-bikes is proving very popular in cities and would seem to extend threshold... more »

Guidance for structures over active airport taxiways

Bridge structures over taxiways are becoming more common at large airports. DEN, SEA, and LGA all have bridges that are complete or under construction. There is very little guidance on structures, fire codes for aircraft fueling in vicinity of the bridge, and clearances for OFA and TSA, particularly vertically. Would like to help develop some guidance, in particular with fueling and vertical clearances, and faa required... more »

Risk Evaluation at Runway High Speed Exits

Majority of aviation accidents have occurred in airports, and it is significantly high during the landing phase. With growing demand when aircraft movements divert in to high speed exit taxiways, possible aircraft accidents may not be uncommon in these high speed exit taxiways as well.

Animals at Airports

There are all kinds of animals coming through airports today: service animals, comfort animals, security animals, and pets, not to mention farm animals, zoo animals, circus animals, primates, uninvited wild animals ("pests"), and marine life. How should airports set up protocols, physical spaces, and customer service messaging to coordinate and manage as today's Noah's Arcs of air travel?

Guidance for Enhancing the Customer Experience for Senior Passengers

Wheel chairs and wheel chair pushers abound in airports as the population ages. Aside from the logistics and facilities issues such as large font signage and cell phone apps, the more serious issues of passengers becoming disoriented, dealing with dementia that has not been diagnosed, losing carry-on bags or falling victim to scams while traveling are becoming more problematic. Airports require more guidance to detect... more »
