Wilkomen, Bienvenue, Welcome! The Need for and Benefits to Providing Multilingual and Other Accommodations at Airports

Everyone flies! Today's traveling public is more diverse than ever. U.S. airports are serving people of more countries of origin, age ranges, language groups, nationalities, ethnicities, religious groups, physical/cognitive abilities, and income brackets than ever before.

However, most airports have not done an adequate job of modernizing their communications and facilities to accommodate this diversity. Not only are... more »

Benefit/Cost of Air Cargo Service Liberalization on Airport Investments

A multilateral instrument granting, among other rights, up to and including the 7th freedom traffic right for all-cargo services would provide air carriers the flexibility to develop more profitable routes that serve a larger variety of airports. This could provide significant investment opportunities for airports and enable them to better position themselves for integration into the global supply chain.

Research Projects

Best management considerations in evaluating proposed vertical development on or near airports with airspace impacts.

Establish for the end user a process that would assist airport sponsors and the FAA to evaluate whether a development project is a true hazard based on evaluating imaginary and TERPS surfaces, recognizing current conditions at the specific airport. A goal for this project would be to define a process by which the FAA would accept a sponsor lead approval of a design, that may or may not conform to strict interpretations... more »

Implementation of Project Management Offices (PMO) in US Airports

Project Management Offices (PMOs) are a well-established concept in Project Management literature and they are widespread across much of the private and public sectors. However, the establishment of PMOs (particularly, enterprise PMOs or EPMOs) at US airports – many of which are local government entities – have traditionally lagged behind their contemporaries. Although some PMOs currently exist at US airports, they are... more »

The role of the CDC and other health organizations in airport operations. In Reserve

Airports need to understand the regulatory implications when developing and implementing plans for COVID-19 and other contagions' response. Further, international and US airports have already deployed technologies and operational plans to deal with public wellness and safety all in an attempt to provide a perceived "clean" environment to the public; which will help accelerate the restart of travel.

Aging Air Traffic Control Tower Facilities

Many airports have air traffic control tower (ATCT) facilities that were constructed more than 50 years ago and despite renovation and rehabilitation efforts, they are reaching the end of their useful life. Some do not meet updated FAA siting and design criteria, and other state-of-art practices. NATCA conducted a survey in 10 years ago (2007) that indicated over two-thirds of the ATCTs were rated as having fair to poor... more »

Revenue and Customer Satisfaction Decision-Enabler Model

A research paper and computational model is needed to help airports thoroughly look at financial decisions for new infrastructure that result in improved processing rates, increasing non‐aeronautical revenue justifications, prioritizing gating requests that match with changes in airline network models, creating the best financial return for all parties, and improves the overall satisfaction of passengers (check‐in, security... more »

A Gap Analysis of Aviation Infrastructure Between Airport and Air Navigation Service Capacities

There is a potentially a gap between airport capacity (e.g., runways, gates) and the increased capacity brought about by the satellite-based, digital infrastructure being implemented. Identifying the gaps between these two capacities and solutions to fill them will help decision makers be more effective in making wise investment decisions so that future airport and ANSP initiatives to increase capacity are more cost-effective... more »

Guidebook to Managing Landside Facility Constraints

Develop a guidebook that provides strategies (best management practices) that airport operators and other stakeholders can use to manage demand placed on landside facilities (e.g. ground transportation infrastructure) in a constrained environment. The guidebook reviews existing and proposed operational, financial and logistical strategies that airport operators or other entities are permitted to use to encourage efficient... more »

Virtual Airport Traffic Control and Ramp Control Facilities—Guidance for U.S. Airports In Reserve

The objective of this research project is to provide U.S. airport operators with guidance regarding the potential roles "virtual" ATCTs and ramp control towers can play at their facilities, and their major components and supporting technologies, and the advantages and disadvantages of these virtual facilities relative to their traditional counterparts.
The project also will provide guidance regarding how airport operators,... more »
