Infrastructure condition assessment using mobile devices

Current methods of assessing the condition of airport pavement and infrastructure typically require restricting access or use, closing, and/or using expensive assessment methods or tools. Technology integrated into most mobile phones (gyroscopes, accelerometers, cameras, etc.) can be used to automatically collect and wirelessly transmit infrastructure-related data to a central database providing real-time tracking of ...more »

Airport Common Use Program Development Guidebook

In 2010, the ACRP published Report 30: Reference Guide on Understanding Common Use at Airports. Since that time, the airport strategies for implementation of common use and the technological solutions have significantly changed. Today, there is a greater focus on the "seamless passenger journey", providing new common use options, introducing technology innovations, and adapting to new business models. The research proposed ...more »

Geospatial Data Governance - Organizational Factors and Best Practices

Airport and related aviation organizations generate and absorb large amounts of data, particularly geospatial data such as CAD, GIS, BIM, LiDAR, and aerial imagery. How can airports leadership and staff learn from industry best practices, including from others such as university campuses, in terms of effectively managing the flow of data to facility operations, maintenance, and other end-users, so they are not held up ...more »

Best Practices for Implementing Effective Airport Biometrics - A Primer

Air traveler volume is rising year over year, placing strain on airport facilities' ability to process passengers efficiently and effectively in an operational footprint constrained by long-term capital investments. Additionally, airports must continuously mitigate against the risk posed by the "insider threat." Biometrics (e.g. fingerprint, facial, iris recognition) have the potential to mitigate these risks, capture ...more »

Public & consortium blockchain mechanisms are needed to integrate, secure and monetize the data produced by IoT devices

Blockchain technology (e.g., open source Enterprise Ethereum) can be used as a vendor neutral integration layer to secure IoT devices to prevent malicious attacks, enable myriad IoT devices installed at the airports to work together in concert to unlock new value creation between different parties, and reward IoT operators for the value produced by data.

Using NEXRAD weather surveillance network to forecast movements of migratory birds impacting safety at US airports

More than 14,000 wildlife strikes were reported to the Federal Aviation Administration in 2017. Globally, wildlife strikes have killed more than 287 people and destroyed over 263 aircraft from 1988 through November 2018 (Dolbeer and Begier. 2019). To warn pilots of potential wildlife hazards, airports often include generic language in the Automated Terminal Information System (ATIS) or Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) that does ...more »

Automated Assistance in the Airports for Special Needs Passengers(3A-SNP)-The use of Indoor Unmanned Vehicles - IUA

Some passengers with special needs are loosing autonomy by using the actual costly and somehow inefficient manual service for reduced mobility passengers. The idea novelty is to suggest an automated solution using either existing airport means or advanced technlogy solutions for providing such a service. The architectural concept of the system is scallable in order to easilly implement any service for any specific need. ...more »
