Effectiveness of Airport Escalator Speed Reduction

Risk management professionals have acknowledged that the reduction of airport escalator speed eases the transitions on and off of the the escalator. No speed studies have been conducted on airport escalators to determine an optimal escalator speed in the airport environment.

Development of Guidelines for Airport Escalator Design and Operation

The ACRP Synthesis Study ( S04-25) Escalator Falls, identified two areas design and regulatory issues that need to be addressed to improve the safety of airport escalators. The two areas are (1) escalator signage that is pertinent to the airport environment, and (2) the use of bollards and other physical barriers that prevent people from bringing large and inappropriate items onto escalators.
