New research that identifies and describes the cognitive abilities used in airfield operations, as well as the limitations and potential complications of current practices. The research should identify methods for mitigating risks inherent to human performance and should identify and/or recommend best practices for developing or improving these abilities.
The goal of this research idea is to develop a predictive model of jet blast exposure based on local parameters (taxiway slope, operating conditions, aircraft operator practices, temperature, types of aircraft, etc.). This model will be based on jet blast measurements performed at various airports of different size and traffic in the U.S.
The proposed work will provide a synthesis on the experiences of airport operators so far with integrating the alternative jet fuels into the airport fuel setting.
Compile and contextualize lessons learned, including strengths and areas for improvement, identified by airports of all sizes from around the nation. These lessons learned, derived from documented after action reports and interviews with airport officials, will support industry-wide preparedness when collected and shared.
Runways routinely require the removal of rubber to maintain adequate surface friction. According to FAA AC 150/5320-12C, rubber can be removed by High-Pressure Water, Chemical, High-Velocity Impact, and Mechanical removal. Survey experiences with various airports in different climates to assess the cost, time required, benefits, and tradeoffs with various methods of rubber removal.
Aviation accident data has limitations for establishing airport safety zones used to guide airport-vicinity land use decisions. Establishing uniform reporting criteria across responsible agencies will assist local jurisdictions to define safety zones and apply them to maintain airport viability.
A Fatigue Risk Management Program (FRMP), specific to the needs of ramp workers, will be developed and implemented in at least one airport with the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of the program evaluated. An implementation schedule should then be devised to provide a successful program to ramp workers in major airports across the country.
The goal of this research is to provide airports with best practices for addressing the homeless at airports.
