Knowledge is Power: Knowledge Management Guidance to Help Airports Thrive In Reserve

Airports need to understand the best ways to preserve institutional knowledge as large scale industry changes occur and both leaders and experienced employees at all levels of the organization are eligible for retirement and leave the airport. Knowledge management and institutional knowledge transfer should be incorporated into all aspects of airports, including the culture, training delivery platforms, and automated... more »

Reconciling Privacy Laws with Biometric Innovation at Airports

It is proposed to conduct legal research to produce a survey of Federal, state, and foreign privacy laws applicable to the collection and use of biometric technology by the air industry, analyses and categorization of pertinent laws, and their requirements, and a discussion of practices best designed to foster compliance.

Guidebook for Improved Data Privacy Management In Reserve

Airports are collecting and processing a large amount of data from a traveler, including but not limited to personal identification, medical records (COVID-19 related), and biometric information. The guidebook intends to analyze the status quo of how US airports handle data privacy and to inform airport stakeholders of a comprehensive strategy to guide them towards better data privacy management.

Transportation Emergency Response Application (TERA): Migration Options Beyond 2020 due to Flash End of Life In Reserve

Many emergency software applications have been developed in Flash, which no longer will be supported by the developer.

The selected research team will focus on developing a technology migration roadmap and working with TRB to identify the key requirements, features, and content of TERA that are vital to preserve, and those which can be redesigned, updated, or omitted entirely.

Opportunities for Remote Work at Airports: Lessons Learned from COVID-19

Due to COVID-19, airport operators had to develop strategies for maintaining the activity with social distancing. Some of them include remote work and remote learning. However, not all the tasks can be performed from home (e.g., real-time operations management). The goal of this synthesis would be to list the tasks and missions that airports have experimented in remote work, to explore the training sessions that can be... more »

Implementation of Project Management Offices (PMO) in US Airports

Project Management Offices (PMOs) are a well-established concept in Project Management literature and they are widespread across much of the private and public sectors. However, the establishment of PMOs (particularly, enterprise PMOs or EPMOs) at US airports – many of which are local government entities – have traditionally lagged behind their contemporaries. Although some PMOs currently exist at US airports, they are... more »

The role of the CDC and other health organizations in airport operations. In Reserve

Airports need to understand the regulatory implications when developing and implementing plans for COVID-19 and other contagions' response. Further, international and US airports have already deployed technologies and operational plans to deal with public wellness and safety all in an attempt to provide a perceived "clean" environment to the public; which will help accelerate the restart of travel.

Efficacy of Pilot Braking Action Reports to RCAM Using ASTM Standard Definitions

ASTM in concert with the Society of Aircraft Performance and Operations Engineers recently published E3188 - Standard Terminology for Aircraft Braking Performance. Measuring the braking reports from flight crews trained with the new definitions are then mapped to runway conditions and aircraft measurements to create an objective metric for accuracy.

Applying Dynamic Network Analysis and Organizational Behavior Theory to Improve Collaboration for Airport Construction Projects

Develop guidance on how the airport industry can employ new technologies and techniques used in other industries to provide real-time feedback on communication networks and collaboration (who is communicating with whom, about what, how often) in construction projects during delivery.

The ultimate objective of employing this type of technology is to enhance collaboration to better meet project / organizational goals,... more »

Best Practices for Implementing Effective Airport Biometrics - A Primer In Reserve

Air traveler volume is rising year over year, placing strain on airport facilities' ability to process passengers efficiently and effectively in an operational footprint constrained by long-term capital investments. Additionally, airports must continuously mitigate against the risk posed by the "insider threat." Biometrics (e.g. fingerprint, facial, iris recognition) have the potential to mitigate these risks, capture... more »

Using Security Automation as a Revenue Stream

Airports parking garages use automated license plate scanning in support or in lieu of paper tickets to establish fee payments. This technology might also be used to identify vehicles that might cause a threat and vehicles that might have civil or criminal enforcement issues.

The airport vehicle monitoring system and parking garages could be linked to local and national law enforcement centers to validate vehicle licenses... more »
