Open innovation in the terminal: real-time feedback from travelers on airport initiatives

A lot of talent goes through the terminals daily. Airports can solicit targetted feedback on specific projects and initiatives from the travelers. There is no better source or time since the customers are in the right state of mind to provide feedback that affects them.

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

Compared to a traveler in a terminal a given airport worker will visit one less airport that day than a passenger. The airport workers, while experts in the field, may lack out of the box thinking due to the knowledge of constraints and regulations. This post is written by someone who is not in the airports industry. The diversity of cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary experience of travelers at the airports is phenomenal. Capture this energy and harvest it to make improvements to ideas, concepts, and projects more relevant. Engaging the members of the public in an ad-hoc way by presenting them with specific tasks or activities to do while at the airport will activate an incredible level of structure feedback if the system for collecting and refining the feedback is designed correctly.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

Working prototype of a reward based open innovation software. The airports will get a rapidly deployable mobile based and community curated system to provide and curate feedback on any publicly accessible space at an airport. Airports will get invaluable feedback from travelers for pennies on a dollar.

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)

The resulting solution will be a working prototype of a system that will be used in a select number of airports across the US. The airports authorities will use the system to solicit feedback on ideas and project improvements. Instead of using special research groups or hiring outside vendors to conduct studies the airports will be able to get actionable feedback and see the evolution of that feedback from the travelers themselves. The system may be designed similar to the Stackoverflow site by allowing multiple people to submit ideas and letting others vote and improve on the answers. A few iterations of crypto economic and game theory models will be developed to incentivize participants to take action. A system such as Treum.io can be used for that. This approach will enable participants to accumulate points at airport X and redeem points at airport Y. The redemption system may be tested and to include steep discounts or free items at vendors or perhaps donation to a charity.

Cost Estimate and Backup (Provide a cost estimate and support for how you arrived at the estimate.)

Approximately 250K will be in software engineering costs. There will be no licensing costs as the software components to be used will be open sourced.
Approximately $50K for crypto economics and game theory expertise.
Approximately $25K for travel to about 10 airports to setup and support the launch.
Approximately $20K in incentives for travelers to take action.
About $5K in hosting costs.
