Long term Benefits of constructing transverse joints in asphalt pavements.

Are engineered transverse joints in asphalt pavement worth the initial investment and maintenance cost over the length of the pavement?

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

Construction of engineered transverse joints in asphalt pavements can help to control random shrinkage cracking in asphalt pavements. These joints are typically sawn and sealed during initial construction and need to be resealed over time. In general these engineered joints are often wider than random transverse cracks that will develop over time. However, straighter joints are easier to maintain than random irregular cracks.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

Are engineered transverse joints in asphalt pavement worth the initial investment and maintenance cost over the length of the pavement?
