Joint Construction for Asphalt Pavements at Airports

Joint construction of asphalt pavements is critical for pavement performance. While some airports will pave their runways in echelon, other techniques can be used to effectively ensure joint performance. This synthesis would provide a state of the practice on joint construction and provide insight for airfields to determine the best options for specifications.

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

Joint construction is one of the biggest challenges with constructing asphalt pavements. If a joint is not properly built, water can infiltrate the joint and cause deterioration. Joint deterioration then bleeds into the pavement structure and can eventually lead to failure. New technology and construction methods are available which can improve joint construction; however, standards and specifications need to be adopted which allow contractors to advance these methods and technologies. This synthesis would provide the FAA and airports with information which could help expand those specifications.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

This project would produce a report which would provide guidance for ensuring joints constructed for asphalt runways have the highest probability of achieving long-term performance.

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)
  1. Conduct a survey to determine current asphalt joint construction specifications for runways and taxiways.
  2. Conduct a literature review of current research on joint construction.
  3. Critically review the current technologies and construction methodologies to determine which possible ideas are most viable for constructing long-lasting joints.
Related Research - List related ACRP and other industry research; describe gaps (see link to Research Roadmaps above), and describe how your idea would address these gaps. This is a critical element of a synthesis topic submission.

Some research was recently done for highway joint construction by the Asphalt Institute for the Federal Highway Administration; however, construction of airfields and runways is different and there needs to be an expansion of this work to include airfields and runways.
