Infrastructure condition assessment using mobile devices

Current methods of assessing the condition of airport pavement and infrastructure typically require restricting access or use, closing, and/or using expensive assessment methods or tools. Technology integrated into most mobile phones (gyroscopes, accelerometers, cameras, etc.) can be used to automatically collect and wirelessly transmit infrastructure-related data to a central database providing real-time tracking of pavement and infrastructure condition. The potential of mega-data collected at low cost and effort would provide deeper insights about state of condition as well as data driven preventive maintenance.

A recent project sponsored by the Missouri Department of Transportation and conducted by the University of Missouri demonstrated that such a system can accurately assess the condition of airport runways and taxiways. This ACRP project will extend and expand the current body of knowledge.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

"Data driven condition assessments of pavements and infrastructure.
Preventative maintenance.
Cheaper and more accurate data on pavement conditions thus improving life cycle costs."

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)
  1. Conduct a literature review on the current state of the art for assessing the condition of airport pavement and infrastructure.
  2. Investigate technology integrated into most mobile phones (gyroscopes, accelerometers, cameras, etc.) can be used to automatically collect and wirelessly transmit infrastructure-related data to a central database providing real-time tracking of pavement and infrastructure condition.
  3. Review work done by Univeristy of Missouri demonstrated that such a system can accurately assess the condition of airport runways and taxiways.
  4. Identify a set of airports to test methodology to demonstrate the value of infrastructure condition assessment using mobile devices
  5. Validate the results of Step 4 by comparing outcomes against a traditional analysis
  6. Evaluate practical issues such as scalability, and recommend topics implementation strategy and further research needs.

$500,000 with 24 month duration based on other ACRP project related to asset management and use of information technology.

ACRP has done signifiant work with pavement assessments but has not explored cost effective data intensive approaches using mobile devices. The highway and freight transporation sectors have explored the use of mobile devises for data collection.
