Improving the Durability of Concrete Pavement Surfaces through Improved Specifications and Testing

The objective of this research is to provide recommended improvements to the current P-501 specification along with recommendations for improved paving practices to enhance or insure the durability of the concrete surface. This project will identify major airports that are experiencing durability issues, measure the scale of the issue through field inspections, and conduct a petrographic examination of the concrete materials.

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

Airports have used concrete pavements, especially for heavily used runways, due to the durability of its surface. However, with increased aircraft loadings with higher tire pressures and the use of vertical transverse grooves, some airports are experiencing some deterioration. This increases the potential for FOD, which is a primary factor for airport managers when deciding to rehabilitate.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)
