Improve Traveler Experience while Generating Additional Revenue Through the Effective Use of Data

Recent data suggests that a 0.01% increase in passenger satisfaction results in an increased spend of $0.80 per passenger, while an additional 10 minutes spent in line, decreases that spend by 30%. Using available data to generate and push valuable information to the traveling public will optimize and help streamline the passenger travel experience, leading to increased passenger satisfaction, as well as increased airport revenue.

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

Due to a lack of aggregated information passengers do not know how long it will take to get from their start point to the gate taking into account traffic/transit to the airport, check-in times, queues at the TSA checkpoint, etc. Airlines and Airports would like to know when passengers arrive so they can adjust their staffing levels appropriately. All of this data is available in a stovepiped fashion, the barriers between these data sources need to be broken down.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

A definition for a smart broker service that would allow airlines to have access to, and provide, relevant end to end journey data for their passenger's flights from the airports which they operate from to improve their passenger's travel experience. Airports would receive aggregate data by terminal to help them plan their operations without letting them access granularity of data that airlines would be uncomfortable with sharing to allow comparison between airline operations.

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)

The research effort will determine the necessary data to be captured, the structures and protocols for access to the service, and produce a proof of concept so that it can be developed commercially.

Cost Estimate and Backup (Provide a cost estimate and support for how you arrived at the estimate.)

There will need to be representation from the airlines and airports, with a couple of more technical independent experts each involved for about 3 days for determining what data is important to capture and determine the 'rules of the road' for sharing and anonymizing data as required before sharing. Total Effort 24 person days.

The development of a demonstration broker system cost are unknown at this time and will depend on the amount of data to be shared and the complexity of anonymizing data before sharing
