Effective Practices for Airport Safety Promotion

Conduct research and create a report detailing effective practices airports can use to promote safety programs and enhance safety performance by airport personnel and employees of airport stakeholders.

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

In order for an airport to gain acceptance from employees in existing and newly implemented safety processes, airport leadership must promote safety efforts. Effective Safety Promotion, one of the four components of a safety management system (SMS), goes beyond posters and logos. Dedicated promotion processes and activities can include communications from management, the use of mobile devises for communication, personnel and organizational collaboration, safety training and, most importantly, addressing important hazards and mitigation of risks in a way visible to employees. As more airports adopt SMS processes, sharing effective practices in safety promotion used by early airport SMS adopters, and by other industries known for advanced safety management can be used to enhance safety performance for airports of all sizes.
This research should explore daily airport safety promotion activities used in the U.S. and by airports in other countries, examine the effectiveness of materials produced by airport industry organizations for mass use, and investigate unique safety events such as annual safety seminars held at individual airports where outside organizations are invited to attend. The research should explore how airports measure the effectiveness of their programs in both quantitative and qualitative ways.
Outputs of the research should include examples of safety promotion materials that can be used by or modified to fit the needs of airport of all sizes.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

A report detailing effective practices airports can use to promote safety programs and enhance safety performance by airport personnel and employees of airport stakeholders and will include examples of safety promotion materials that can be used or modified to fit the needs of airports of all sizes.
