Construction sequencing best practices for airports

New construction and renovation projects at airports experience cost and schedule constraints due to the unique operational aspects and differing facility types. For example, apron expansions must give heed to airside operations and terminal renovations of retail space must often take place overnight when passenger traffic in minimal. This research will investigate state of the art techniques to enhance construction sequencing of airport related construction projects with focus on renovation projects that tend to experience time and cost constraints.

Little thought is given to optimize sequencing of construction or renovation schedules. Owners, designers, and contractors often disagree on what is the best sequence and schedule to meet objectives, cost and time considerations.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

More predicable construction and renovation project schedules.
Lower cost projects.
Limited disruption to traveling public and airport tenants.
The over all goal is provide airport operators, consults, and contractors a best practice guide in sequencing and scheduling construction activity.

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)

The primary source of information will come from interviews with owners, designers and contractors with experience scheduling airport construction and removation projects. Steps to conduct the project include:

  1. Interviews with airport owners on lessons learned from scheduling and sequencing projects
  2. Interviews with design firms on practices and lessons learned from scheduling and sequencing projects
  3. Interviews with contractors on means and methods, and lessons learned from scheduling and sequencing projects
  4. Literature review on construction industry practices related to sequencing work
  5. Development of best practices and guidebook on optimizing sequencing of construction and renovation work
Cost Estimate and Backup (Provide a cost estimate and support for how you arrived at the estimate.)

$400,000 for 24 month effort based on previous ACRP research related to constuction/maintenance

Related Research - List related ACRP and other industry research; describe gaps (see link to Research Roadmaps above), and describe how your idea would address these gaps. This is a critical element of a synthesis topic submission.

ACRP Project 08-03 is related to the development of construction safety plans
ACRP Project 09-15 BIM Beyond Design
Both project deal with ballpark issues and concerns and this effort would complement both.
