Climate Change Preparation and Risk Mitigation at Airports

Air travel is facing increasing threats to operations and facilities from climate changes, but there is not clear guidance on how airports should prepare. This study would examine the potential impacts and offer guidance on how best to defend against these threats.

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

Air travel is facing increasing threats to operations and facilities from climate changes, but there is not clear guidance on how airports should prepare. This study would examine the potential impacts and offer guidance on how best to defend against these threats.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

The final report would be a guidebook that airport planning managers could use to ensure future operational performance for airlines and other airport users as the impacts of climate change increase.

Related Research - List related ACRP and other industry research; describe gaps (see link to Research Roadmaps above), and describe how your idea would address these gaps. This is a critical element of a synthesis topic submission.

TRB last studied this for airports in 2008, with Special Report 290: Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U.S. Transportation. Last year Eurocontrol issued its own study, which identified further challenges to airport design and maintenance from climate change.
