Apron/Ramp paint marking manual to establish common marking standards for ramp/aprons at US Airports

Conduct a survey of ramp/apron markings currently being used on US Airports and develop an apron/Ramp paint marking manual to establish common marking standards for ramp/aprons

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

The AAAE Operations, Safety, Planning and Emergency Management Committee, Airspace and Safety working group has been looking for a number of years to develop a voluntary ramp/apron painting standard for U.S. Airports, that would give the industry the same benefits we currently have for runways and taxiways. Up to now, Airports have been mostly on there own to develop these markings, This creates confusion for unfamiliar pilots. The scope of the project is larger than the working group or the committee complete.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

A Ramp/Apron manual that will provide a common standard for markings at all US airports. This would result in less confusion for pilots.

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)

• Conduct an industry survey to determine what kind of ramp markings are being used by U.S. Airports
• Establish and industry Committee/Panel to evaluate the results.
• Develop a voluntary ramp/apron markings standards Manual
• Select a number of Airports to act as testing locations
• Survey Pilots at the test airports
• Evaluate the responses from the test airports
• Update the manual
• Publish the manual for general industry use
• Consider submission to FAA

Cost Estimate and Backup (Provide a cost estimate and support for how you arrived at the estimate.)

Approximately $350,000.
