Airport Parking Strategies Preparing for Robotaxis and Electric Vehicles In Reserve

Major changes are in the offing that will impact parking needs at airports - transitioning of the automotive fleet to electric power will require charging facilities. Automation (autonomous cars) will reduce parking demands. The pace of these changes is largely unknown, but strategic thinking is needed to prepare for these changes.

The transition to electric vehicles (EV) and to autonomous vehicles (AV) will have significant implications for airport parking for both air passengers and airport staff. The transitions likely will also impact curb usage and ground transportation center operations. electric vehicles will require charging facilities and autonomous vehicles like robotaxis will impact parking demand and curb usage. The transitions also likely will impact parking related revenue (charging might even have a profit margin).

The future has many unknowns including recovery of air travel demand, but strategizing risks and potential management measures seems needed to wisely prepare.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

The Synthesis would provide best estimates of fleet transitions to EV and AV possibly as ranges and would identify the likely implications on airport parking, curb usage and ground transportation center facilities, along with potential strategies to address the evolving challenges.

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)

The research is envisioned to consist of a literature/internet search on airport parking, electric vehicle deployment and support infrastructure as well as on the pace and form of autonomous vehicle deployment.

An outreach effort involving thought leaders is proposed to frame the challenges and opportunities

Following the thought leader outreach an internet survey is proposed for a range of airport operators

Cost Estimate and Backup (Provide a cost estimate and support for how you arrived at the estimate.)

The research is macro in nature and could be accomplished with a budget of about $45,000. The literature search could be accomplished for about 5,000 and the thought leader outreach (using zoom) for about 15,000. A budget of 15,000 is proposed for the internet survey with the remaining budget allocated to management and report development.

Most of the research on airport parking has been pre EV and AV and is now dated. These efforts include ACRP Report 24 on parking, and ACRP Synthesis reports 18 and 54 on parking and EVs.
