Synthesis Topics

Airport Best Practices for Protecting the Public and Workers from COVID-19

The synthesis would collect and present best practices developed by airports to protect the public and the airport workers (incl. tenants and stakeholders) from COVID-19. The domain of the study includes the landside (esp. how to ensure consistency between airport and mass transit, TNCs, etc.), the terminal area (incl. the restricted access areas), and the airside (ramp and airfield workers).

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has not spared one single member of the broader airport ecosystem. Its impacts are unprecedented due to its importance, duration, and expected length of the recovery. One of the biggest challenges of the post-COVID-19 era will reside in the capacity of the aviation industry to learn from this event to increase its resilience toward future epidemics and pandemics. Airports need to adapt to the 'new normal' but also reinvent themselves to anticipate new COVID-19 outbreaks and future communicable diseases. Lessons learned from the current pandemic can be used for enhancing the way we plan, design, and operate airports.

COVID-19 has disrupted airport activities. Airport operators and their stakeholders have developed best practices for protecting the public and the airport workers from COVID-19 and mitigating the risk of transmission. This includes - but is not limited to - recommendation or obligation to wear masks, banning meeters and greaters from terminals, social distancing markers, distribution of PPEs, making hand sanitizer available everywhere, postponing mandatory training sessions and adapting the process for getting an airport badge, etc.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

The objective is to develop a synthesis of lessons learned and best practices developed by airport operators and their stakeholders for potential use during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and future pandemics/epidemics as well.

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)

- Review of existing literature.

- Identifying areas of focus.

- Survey to airports.

- Analyzing results.

- Developing a synthesis.

Related Research - List related ACRP and other industry research; describe gaps (see link to Research Roadmaps above), and describe how your idea would address these gaps. This is a critical element of a synthesis topic submission.
