Airfield Electrical Infrastructure Survey

Create, collect, and analyze data from an Airfield Electrical Infrastructure Survey that documents product types, installation methods and maintenance methods of airfield electrical equipment.

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

If you have seen one airport you have seen one airport or so the joke goes. Although the FAA AC 150/5340-30 guides designers and airports in airfield electric products and methods, airfield electrical Infrastructure, equipment, and installation methods vary from airport to airport. Also airfield maintenance methods can differ from initial installation. FAA Charts and Navigation plates tell what type of NavAids one might find, however it doesn't tell the us a complete picture of the airfield electrics including product types or how they are installed.

Although FAA Advisory Circulars provide guidance there is not a consolidated set of good data of what is out there, what is working, and what is not working. Personally I think LED adoption metrics would be useful to know for airports looking to make the transition. If more than 50% of airports have adopted LED medium intensity taxiway lights then that would be a good metric to know for an airport considering making the jump. Or what airports have implemented bench-top or in-situ photometric testing of light fixtures.

"The end result of a study would be to have an understanding of what to expect electrically at each airfield and what is currently being adopted by airports of different size and location. Ideally the end result would be a data set that would document and analyze the airfield electrical installation infrastructure (example metrics below).

A basic preliminary survey completed by airport consultants and/or airport maintenance personnel. Many consultants or airport staff should be able to provide basic information and if not then "unknown"
A simple survey such as the one linked here should provide adequate information to start

Related Research - List related ACRP and other industry research; describe gaps (see link to Research Roadmaps above), and describe how your idea would address these gaps. This is a critical element of a synthesis topic submission.

To my knowledge, I don't believe ACRP, manufacturers, nor any other organization has pursued data acquisition of this type. I know of a electrical engineering doctoral candidate that might be trying to complete a dissertation on airfield electrical maintenance, however I believe his study is more on how airfields are being maintained vs the products and methods being used. This study might be slightly related with regards to maintenance data acquisition, however I don't believe the metrics are close enough.

To my knowledge there isn't data collected of this type.
