A Compilation of Airport Lessons Learned From the Coronavirus Pandemic

Compile and contextualize lessons learned, including strengths and areas for improvement, identified by airports of all sizes from around the nation. These lessons learned, derived from documented after action reports and interviews with airport officials, will support industry-wide preparedness when collected and shared.

Background (Describe the current situation or problem in the industry, and how your idea would address it.)

The impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic were felt everywhere. For airports, the impacts included changes to every facet, land side and air side, including airport employees, tenants, security, airline operations, support operations, and travelers. Every airport reacted to these impacts in their own way, though there were certainly commonalities among many. Airport personnel should have captured lessons learned, including strengths and areas for improvement, which can be incorporated into their future preparedness activities, including planning, organizing, equipping, training, and exercises. Airports and other stakeholders can benefit from a synthesis of lessons learned to support their own idea development and progression of preparedness activities.

Objective (What is the desired product or result that will help the airport industry?)

To support continued preparedness by airports through sharing of lessons learned in the Coronavirus response.

Approach (Describe in general terms the steps you think are needed to achieve the objective.)

ACRP in cooperation with industry partners such as AAAE will support outreach to airport administrators and emergency management personnel to obtain information on lessons learned. As this information may come in different formats, the research team should be prepared to accept written after action reports (in the standard HSEEP format and otherwise) or other documents. Data collection can also be performed via online surveys and interviews. All information should be organized and coded for anonymity, though some airport officials may agree to some examples provided with attribution as case studies published within the synthesis, providing additional context.

Related Research - List related ACRP and other industry research; describe gaps (see link to Research Roadmaps above), and describe how your idea would address these gaps. This is a critical element of a synthesis topic submission.

ACRP has supported projects on airport preparedness and response to communicable diseases in recent years.

Potential gaps include receiving information in different formats, resulting in some lessons learned to be missing context or other important information to make consistent collation within the synthesis challenging to maintain. This can be overcome through follow up interviews as well as requesting information in a consistent format, such as through an online survey.
